Drip Bag Brew Guide
Drip Bag Coffee is a more convenient way to enjoy “Pour Over Style” coffee. It pours hot water on coffee ground that sits inside a filter bag hanging on a coffee mug. You can enjoy a delicious coffee without grinding and packing coffee.
Things you need:
Step 1: Plan the coffee
Beautiful things always start with a good plan. You cannot brew a delicious coffee without knowing what you are doing.
In this brew, we are aiming:
Coffee Dose: 10 grams
Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:15
Water Temperature: 90 celsius
Water Amount: 150 grams
Total Brewing Time: 1 minute 30 seconds ± 10 seconds
Step 2: Open the package and tear the filter bag along perforation
Our drip bag have injected nitrogen in the package to preserve its freshness and flavours
How oxygen affects the coffee:
Once coffee beans or grounds touch the air, coffee flavours and smell start to degrade as solubles start to oxidise, that’s why we inject nitrogen into the package to keep our coffee fresh inside the bag.
If you found your coffee does not expand like a dome while blooming, likely the coffee beans were not fresh enough to present flavours described on their package (grinding the beans finer may help, but not much).
Step 3: Stretch the hangers to fix on the mug
Give the drip bag a shake to get a good spread of the coffee bed
Why we shake the coffee before pouring:
While we are brewing coffee, we want our coffee to be brewed as even as possible. No one wants their coffee to be very acidic at the beginning and very bitter in the aftertaste. Therefore, it is important to spread your coffee bed evenly beforehand to let your coffee being poured and extracted under your control.
Step 4: Fill your drip bag half full
You need to bloom your coffee to let it degas CO2
How long should I wait for it to bloom:
Blooming does make difference to the coffee. We usually let the coffee bloom for 25-30 seconds, this releases the CO2 contains in the coffee grounds. While we roasting the beans, thermally driven chemical reactions cause the formation of volatile gases in their porous structures. Therefore, the volume of CO2 can also be a sign for knowing the coffee’s freshness as you can know how long since the coffee be roasted.
Time to pour after bloom: After all CO2 were released.
Step 4: Fill up your drip bag twice
Do not pour too much water on the coffee bed trying to make a larger cup, excessive water over-extracts your coffee
Pouring Techniques:
Drip bag coffee is all about convenience, so that’s no point in pouring circles or stirring coffee on purpose. Just simply fill your filter bag twice to get to the planned amount of water.
When brewing drip bag coffee, taller mug is recommended, don’t let your filter bag dip into the coffee below, it makes the extraction uncontrollable and releases the bitterness out from the coffee.
Step 5: Remove the drip bag and discard
Coffee is a beverage that changes flavours in different temperatures, taste it slowly and feel its change
Ending Techniques:
Wait till the water drain through the coffee bed. Alternatively, keep an eye on the timer when the planning time is up. Otherwise, the over extracted coffee is dripping to your coffee below.
After you remove the dripper, give the carafe/mug some swirls to mix the coffee, because drip bag coffee is a filtering method that extracts different flavours in each stage, you want your coffee to taste balanced but not too acidic or too bitter.
Before you taste your coffee, smell and feel the fragrance first. Drink your coffee and take a breath after you swallow, you’ll feel many flavours coming out from your nose and mouth.
